Delphi responds to engine demands with advanced ignition coils

Date: Monday 12 August 2024

Start-stop systems, hybrid engine technology, and the trend for smaller engines are putting more strain on ignition coils than ever before. Delphi is responding to these challenges with a market-leading range of ignition coils specifically developed to meet the needs of today’s vehicles.

“Today’s ignition coils deliver high electrical loads for starting cycles far more frequently due to the rise of start-stop and hybrid technologies,” Luke Garratt, UK & Nordics Technical Services Manager at Delphi. “Short urban journeys can extend gaps and increase starting cycles further. And yet, ignition coils still need to reliably deliver a strong spark, at the right time, to the right cylinder thousands of times per minute.”

Ignition coils are required to generate up to 45,000 volts for efficient combustion and are now expected to operate in larger temperature swings, with more high-load start cycles, increased performance expectations, and weight reductions.

Delphi’s global Original Equipment (OE) expertise ensures that its coils are constructed to the highest standards. Each is meticulously crafted using high-quality wiring, insulation, and coatings, with efficient windings that optimise performance.

During manufacturing, vacuum techniques are used to remove air bubbles, which helps prevent electrical issues like arcing or shorting and ensures long-term durability. Each coil then undergoes thousands of hours of testing to ensure that it can withstand vibration, temperature swings and moisture over many years.

“With our coils, you’re not just fitting a part,” said Luke. “You’re ensuring your customers’ vehicles run smoothly for the long haul.”

Delphi’s range of ignition coils is as diverse as it is robust, with over 430 coils covering 89 per cent of the UK and European car parc, including strong hybrid vehicle coverage. The range includes oil-filled, cassette, pencil, coil-on-plug, distributor coil, and distributorless coil types.

In response to the evolving demands of modern engines, Delphi has also developed multi-spark ignition coils, which are now being introduced to the aftermarket. These innovative coils fire multiple sparks rather than a single spark on each cycle, burning fuel more efficiently and reducing emissions.

To ensure authenticity and protect against counterfeit products, all genuine Delphi ignition coils are logo-etched, and boxes are sealed with a hologram label.

As part of its commitment to providing complete workshop solutions for independent garages, Delphi’s Masters of Motion hub includes a videos on ‘How to Replace an Ignition Coil’ and ‘How to Test Ignition Coils’.
