EVA calls for 2030 ban

The Electric Vehicle Association (EVA) England is urging the government to bring forward the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles to 2030.

The government is in the process of analysing feedback from its consultation on the ban, which has already been brought forward from 2040 to 2035.

The EVA surveyed its members on the issue and 82% of respondents believed the ban should be introduced before 2035. Nearly two thirds support a 2030 phase out and 72.9% say an even earlier ban would be good for the UK economy. Meanwhile, 96% think an earlier phase out date would have a positive impact on public health.

Bridget Phelps, EVA England chair, said: “We are at a critical juncture in our country’s automotive history. Climate leadership demands that we move more quickly to clean our air. Development of electric cars and vans, their batteries, and renewable energy will create jobs and build a path to a more sustainable economy.”

The EVA was formed earlier this year as the voice of electric vehicle drivers in England and they have promised to promote electric vehicle use in England, the environmental and health benefits of electric vehicles to the public, represent the interests of current and prospective electric vehicle drivers in England and to provide services to electric vehicle drivers in England.
