Managing home workers’ Health and Safety: advice from Lawgistics

The Government has again said that (where possible) people should work from home. Consequently, the HSE have again reminded us that Employers have the same health and safety responsibilities for those working at home as any other worker.

The HSE website carries home working guidance and is intended for anyone who employs home workers, including those who split their time between their workplace and home (sometimes referred to as hybrid working).

The guidance published by the HSE about home working has been redesigned and expanded to provide more detail on straightforward actions to manage the homeworkers’ health and safety.

This includes the risks of working with display screen equipment (DSE) at home as well as stress and poor mental health. There is also advice for home workers themselves, as well as a video and practical tips on good posture when working with DSE.

ACTION:

• Share this information with your current home workers.
• Provide homeworkers with a named point of contact for work-related health and safety concerns whilst they are working from their home.
• Consult with homeworkers about their working arrangements, as working from home may not be suitable for each home worker; for example, some workers may not have an appropriate place to work from in their home environment; or they may prefer to come into the workplace for their wellbeing and mental health; or for other reasons.
