Motor insurance during lockdown

Date: Thursday 12 November 2020

Reports have recently been circulating in the media regarding the validity of vehicle insurance during lockdown if the driver is deemed not to be travelling for "essential" reasons such as going to work, medical appointments, food shopping, within a social bubble or short journeys for exercise purposes.

As a result, Boswells have issued a statement to clarify the situation:

‘During lockdown the Government has advised against all but essential travel. Motor insurers continue to cover those using their vehicle for commuting to work and NHS volunteering without you having to first tell them. You should follow Government restrictions, but if you do use your car for non-essential travel, you will not risk invalidating your car insurance.’

Everyone is urged to comply with the restrictions during the period of lockdown and not to undertake any unnecessary travel.
