Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone goes live

Date: Friday 03 February 2023

A Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is now in place in part of Newcastle and Gateshead to help improve air quality by reducing the number of high-polluting vehicles using the roads.

Full details about the CAZ, which covers Newcastle city centre and routes over the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges, can be found at www.breathe-cleanair.com.

Not all vehicles are affected. Private cars, motorbikes and vehicles that meet minimum emissions standards will not be charged.

If you drive an older taxi, van, bus, coach or HGV visit the Breathe website to get information and advice on:

  • checking your vehicle and whether your route is within the CAZ;
  • applying for a vehicle upgrade grant towards the cost of a cleaner vehicle;
  • local exemptions and how to apply;
  • how to pay a CAZ charge and when you need to make a payment.
