NGK trio in the hunt for World Speedway title

Date: Friday 06 August 2021

A trio of NGK-sponsored Speedway stars remain in contention for the 2021 FIM World Championship despite failing to make the podium in the latest Grand Prix rounds.

Russian Emil Sayfutdinov is in fourth place in the standings on 58 points, eight ahead of fifth placed stablemate Freddie Lindgren with triple World champion Tai Woffinden in sixth position with 44 points following rounds 3 and 4 in Wroclaw, Poland.

Both rounds were won by Poland’s Bartosz Zmarzlik who is in third place in the standings just three points behind leaders Maciej Janowski and Artem Laguta.

Double European champion Sayfutdinov suffered a dramatic crash in the final of the first weekend round after a collision with Janowski but walked away unhurt from the incident and reached the semi-finals the next day.

Round 4 saw Woffinden reach the final after a disappointing previous round while fellow NGK sponsored rider Britain’s Robert Lambert made the semi-final stage in both rounds and is currently in 11th position in the championship. However Slovenian Matej Zagar had a difficult weekend scoring just six points at the two meetings and is in 13th position.

John Money, who handles Speedway sponsorship on behalf of NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said:

“Emil did incredibly well to come back from such a spectacular crash while Freddie and Tai each notched 20 points over the weekend. Robert too showed the great potential he has by consistent performances over the two rounds.”

Ignition specialist NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd is a long-time supporter of Speedway with its sponsored SGP riders’ bikes all fitted with its spark plugs. The company’s logo is also featured on the riders’ boards and heat boards at each Grand Prix.

The action continues this weekend with the Orlen Lublin FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland on August 6 & 7 with both meetings being shown on BT Sport.
