Robinson’s racing ahead with NGK

Date: Friday 08 April 2022

Seven-time UK pro mod champion Andy Robinson returns to drag racing this month in his NGK-sponsored race car ‘Anger Management 2.0’.

He will be in action at Northamptonshire’s Santa Pod Raceway over the Bank Holiday weekend (April 15-17) when he takes part in the Festival of Power meeting.

The new look ’69 Camaro race car made its debut last year, three years after the original car was written off in a 200mph accident in the 2018 National Finals at the Santa Pod Raceway. So bad was the damage that the team were left with no choice but to write off the original race car, known as ‘Anger Management’.

Fortunately Andy, driver and owner of the race team, walked away shaken but otherwise unhurt, testament to the team’s acknowledged excellence in chassis and roll cage design and fabrication.

The accident came at the end of a season that had seen the team continually raise the performance bar, culminating in a record breaking run of 5.867 seconds and a top speed of 246.37mph for the quarter mile.

Ignition and sensor specialist NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd and Andy’s company, Robinson Race Cars, have a long-established relationship spanning more than eleven years.

Andy’s son Luke, who is Chief Engineer with Robinson Race Cars, said:

“NGK is our most important partner. It’s not just a name on the side of the car, it’s much more, with the quality of their parts being ideal for our supercharged methanol fuelled engine. We can rely on the quality of their spark plugs and also the technical back-up that the company gives us.”

Anger Management 2.0 will be fitted with totally new engine parts for the Santa Pod meeting.

Luke said:

“Everything is really good.We are just finishing the last jobs on the car and fitting new components. When we raced it last year we really used it as a test for this season. We aim to compete in this year’s Motorsport UK British Drag Racing Championship but it is really too early to talk about winning championships. Initially we will be looking to get into the five second zone and hopefully then we will be competitive.”

While the original Anger Management was out of action NGK and Robinson Race Cars worked together on the MO70 Dragmower project which saw a ride-on mower transformed to reach 115.53mph in just 9.49 seconds at Santa Pod Raceway in 2018, which was believed to be a record at the time for a ride-on mower over a quarter-mile distance.

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said:

“We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Robinson Race Cars for more than a decade and are looking forward to once again working closely with the company throughout 2022. It will be great to see Andy back in action at Santa Pod this Easter and I’m sure the team will soon be making a big impact on the track.”

Luke said that meeting reports and videos will be posted on the Robinson Racing Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/robinsonpromod/  and on Instagram throughout the season.
