UK Drivers demand ‘Right to Repair’ choice amid concerns over maintenance costs, survey reveals

Thursday 12 Dec 2024

A survey has revealed a strong consensus among UK drivers: they want the freedom to choose where their vehicles are serviced and repaired.

The survey, conducted by the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF), which gathered responses from 1,042 representative British drivers, highlights just how critical this right is in an environment where vehicle maintenance costs continue to rise.

92% of drivers agreed that they should have the option to choose which workshop services and maintains their vehicle. This is especially important in light of the ongoing economic strain faced by households across the UK.

For many, the ability to choose their preferred repairer is seen as an essential way to keep maintenance costs manageable, while also ensuring that service quality remains high.

The survey also found that 82% of participants support the idea of the UK Government updating legislation to safeguard consumer choice when it comes to vehicle repairs.

The findings indicate that drivers overwhelmingly want government action to ensure they can continue to access affordable repairs and avoid being locked into expensive manufacturer-specific services.

When weighing in on the most important reason for supportive government intervention, nearly half of the respondents (42%) believe legislation is needed to ensure lower maintenance and repair costs by enabling effective competition, while one in four respondents reiterated this, highlighting the increased convenience and improved choice that this kind of policy would bring.

Mark Field, Chief Executive of the IAAF, emphasised the importance of these findings: “The message from drivers is clear: they want to be able to choose where they have their vehicles repaired, and they need government action to ensure their right to do so. Without this, costs will continue to rise, putting additional strain on hard-pressed motorists. The Government must listen and act now to protect choice and lower costs.”

The IAAF continues to campaign for sector-specific legislation through its Right to Repair Campaign, advocating for changes that will keep the independent aftermarket competitive and accessible to all UK drivers.
