Smarter Recruitment for a Changing Aftermarket

Thursday 16 Apr 2026

We’re seeing a clear shift across the aftermarket, it’s not just that hiring is becoming more competitive, it’s that the market is evolving and the approaches that worked a few years ago don’t deliver the same results today.

Many of the businesses who approach us for help tell us the same thing – they’re competing for the same pool of experienced people, roles are taking longer to fill, and when they do hire, it doesn’t always stick. That isn’t a reflection on the talent available, it’s a sign of a market that’s moving quickly.

Vehicles are becoming more complex, customer expectations are rising, and businesses are having to think differently about how they operate and grow. Recruitment has also had to adapt with that pace of change.

We still see a lot of reactive hiring. When a gap appears, pressure builds, and the focus is on filling the role as quickly as possible with speed taking priority over fit.

The businesses that are getting ahead are the ones stepping back and asking – What do we actually need next? Not just today, but six months or a year down the line. Some are continually building their own talent pipelines, while others are choosing to partner with recruiters to keep an eye on the market for them. Both approaches work; it’s about knowing what supports the long‑term plan.

We’re also seeing a broader view of what “good” looks like in a candidate. Experience is still important, but it’s no longer the whole picture. Many of our clients are starting to look more closely at attitude, adaptability and potential, because those are the qualities that matter as roles change and evolve.

A common challenge we’re hearing more often is uncertainty. Businesses know they need to hire, but they’re not always sure what the role should look like, what salary level is right, or what the market will respond to. That’s where having an external view can make a real difference; to sense-check, guide and bring clarity.

As Kerrie Richards, Director at Glen Callum Associates, explains: “We’re seeing businesses take a step back and think more carefully about who they bring into their teams. It’s not just about filling a role anymore, it’s about finding people who have the aptitude to grow with the business. The companies that approach hiring in that way are the ones building stronger, more resilient teams.”

At its best, recruitment becomes less about reacting to gaps and more about shaping the future of the business.

And in a market that’s changing as quickly as this one, that shift isn’t just helpful, it’s becoming essential.
